After emerging in Japan’s independent animation scene with a series of shorts during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ryuya Suzuki moved back home and spent 18 months creating his first feature film entirely by himself on his iPad. Against the backdrop of contemporary social issues — such as elderly drivers, the dark side of the entertainment industry, the unknown deaths of young people, and war — Suzuki’s sprawling animated epic is a cradle-to-grave story of a protagonist who experiences his share of both triumphs and tragedies over his 100 years on earth.
